ASR is enjoyable run&gun platformer that reminds us of the old childhood games that we liked. It is simple, difficulty is easy at the begining and normal at the end, and it is fun. Also it is very cheap, so go buy and enjoy it. Only slight minus that I found is amount and variety of enemies. I think there are more bosses than regular enemies.. At first glance, Alien Splatter Redux may look like a generic pseudo-retro action-platformer. But fortnately, it isn't. Like Oniken and Odallus: The Dark Call, Alien Splatter Redux is a simple, yet well executed game that would feel at home on the Famicom in the late 80's. I would call it a mix of Contra, Solbrain/Shatterhand and Gun-Dec/Vice: Project Doom, with the eventual nod to Ninja Gaiden 2 and Mega Man 2. For the price, the game is a steal, and if you enjoy 8-bit action-platformers, do yourself a favor and play this game.. Quite a fun arcade style platformer.Recommend using an arcade stick for that authentic feel! xD. It's fun until it isn't, which is stage 6 where the instant death things start to pile up to absurd amounts, making your life bar completely moot. Which is a shame, because it's right there, and definitely could've served a purpose.. This game knows what it wants to be, strips itself down to the bare essentials, and provides a concrete experience. Some indie games skimp on the difficulty, preferring to woo you with your nostalgia, but I can faithfully say that this title offers a genuine challenge. You will die, a lot. There's 8 levels in all and each one has a different theme with different environments and hazards unique to it, each with a boss at the end. The graphics are crisp and the controls are tight, and the shooting feels on point.Plenty to like and not much to criticize, especially for 99 cents.. tl;dr: Alien Splatter Redux is an allegorory to artistical consistency and ethics in game development: 'The Ripoff' Guy starts a war against 'Amateur Sh*t' Aliens. It's cheap, ugly, boring and no one wants it.ASR is simplistic pseudo-retro platformer full of pandering for 'good old days' (namely project vice and contra) which brings nothing of value to the genre. It's a checklist 'retro' game. Faux 8bit, primitive soundtrack, moving platforms, elevators, lasers, pickups, instadeath pits etc.The issue isn't the fact that it has nothing of it's own (like Axiom Verge or Shovel Knight), but the fact it isn't even good at ripping other games off (like Super Cyborg). If you are that 'retro' to the point of almost copying artwork, just make sure your game is actually any good in comparison.The main story of the game is that Green Guy goes totally not ripping other games off and kills some Pink Blobs in the process. The same 5 types of pink blobs. Every level. Every small boring and repetitive level (with late ones being ugly too). Music is repetitive and not memorable, it's just a faux 8bit beeps you've seen millions of times. You'll fight the same enemies, jump the same platforms in different tilesets, pickup the same guns. Then there is bosses that look like slightly bigger pink blobs and they sometimes shoot stuff and die. Controls are simple, but a bit glitchy (which is rarely an issue though).Technically the game runs and supports gamepads.Well, I think the game could provide a hour of entertainment for a low price if you have no other platformers to play, but you probably do - the genre is pretty healthy these days.. It's pretty fun, looks and sounds like an authentic 8-bit game but it's pretty damn easy. But for the price I'd still recommend for any fans of the good ol' NES. Others have compared it to Contra, and at first glance, it does resemble that series. However, I find that the platforming has a larger role in the gameplay of Alien Splatter than it does in the Contra games - whereas Contra was more of a shoot-em-up with some light platforming. I wouldn't consider Alien Splatter to be a shoot-em-up. It is an action game. The level designs remind me more of something from Ninja Gaiden than Contra. At any rate, no matter what popular NES franchise you compare it to - it is a very solid retro title that actually looks and feels like an NES game. It could use some more variety in the enemies (the only real let-down in the game), but other than that, I really can't find much to complain about. The graphics are spot-on, the controls are tight enough, and even the music is decent. At this price, it's an absolute steal, and it is better than many of the retro games that I've paid much more money for. It's an easy up-vote from me.
